    If you've been suspended for some reason from mTurk, or if you suspect so, this is a good place to start. Please post your stories in this thread and the moderators and I will do everything in our power to help you.

    You likely will first notice that you've been suspended because you can't log into the system, or if you get an email from mTurk that you've been suspended.

    Most suspensions do not occur out of the blue, usually (but not always), they are preceded by one or more warnings via email.

    1. First, immediately use the 'Contact Us' form, located at the bottom of the MTurk home page. mTurk will generally answer back within 1-2 business days and give you a 'canned response' as to why you were suspended.

    2. It'll probably look like one of these :

    Your account was suspended because our system detected activity on your account that may have violated the participation agreement.

    Your case has been forwarded to our suspension research team to review the suspension decision.

    We will follow up with you in 2 - 3 business days with our decision.

    Thank you for your understanding.


    We regret to inform you that we have suspended your Mechanical Turk account effective immediately. This action was taken because of a consistently low approval rating.

    We regret to inform you that your Amazon Mechanical Turk account has been suspended effective immediately. Your account was closed for use of robots, scripts, or other automated methods as a substitute for your human intelligence or independent judgment to perform tasks, which violates section 3b of our Participation Agreement. You can review the complete Participation Agreement at https://www.mturk.com/worker/participation-agreement

    Once all of your submitted HITs have been approved or rejected, we will disburse your account balance to your primary disbursement method. If you have questions, or believe this decision was made in error, you may email us using the Contact Us form on our Worker website.

    3. Okay, now those responses are only the first volley in a back-n-forth that you'll have to go through to get any useful information.

    4. From here, you'll need to play some BS games with mTurk in order to get your can kicked down the road hopefully to someone that can actually do something.

    5. Return contact the email you first receive requesting more detailed information. Also contact [email protected] and [email protected] .

    6. Send them another email every day until they reply. If their reply is still vague...hit them again.

    7. Rinse and Repeat.

    8. Eventually, you'll get into an actual appeal process. You'll end up with a response like some of these :

    Unfortunately the appeal was denied and this account will remain closed. As previously mentioned the decision is final and we would only have responded if the suspension was reversed.

    9. Not everyone gets the $100

    10. Ultimately, persistence is the key here. Never give up...from past reports (unless you've done something truly heinous) your likelihood of being reinstated is pretty good.

    My account was suspended because they need to validate my identity. Very odd that this would come out of the blue after I've received payments now for several months. Here's the email:

    Greetings from Amazon Mechanical Turk,

    We were unable to validate important details about your Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) account. As a result, your account has been suspended pending additional verification. At this time, we need you to verify your identity so we can reinstate your account.

    In order to verify your identity, please send us a copy of your driver’s license or an equivalent government issued Identification Document (ID). You can provide your ID by sending a scanned copy to our secure fax line at 1-206-569-1407. In addition, please be sure to type or clearly print the following information at the top of the document to help us identify you:

    -- Your first and last name
    -- The email you use to log into your MTurk Worker account

    Once we receive and validate this information, we will proceed with reinstating your account. Please note that if we are unable to verify your identity, you will not able to disburse your current earnings balance or otherwise participate in the MTurk marketplace.

    We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we appreciate your patience with our security measures. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this process, please email us using the Contact Us form on our Worker website:

    I faxed over the info that they asked for and we'll see if it work or if I have to bug them to death.

      VickiFloyd if that's all it is, I'm sure you'll be fine. This happened to me about 4 or 5 years ago. It came out of the blue but I faxed a copy of my birth certificate and basically everything else that had my name on it as a form of ID and I was reinstated about a week to 10 days later.

    Thanks!! I hate not having the ability to work on HITs for a week to 10 days. That's a financial hit for sure.

      I received an email from Amazon (the canned response) it came from this email address: [email protected]
      Hopefully this will help someone.
      And my account is still suspended

        VickiFloyd did you email a copy of your ID or fax it? If you haven't faxed the requested info yet, you can make an account at hellofax.com and fax straight from your computer. I use it several times a year because I don't have access to a fax machine on a regular basis.

      Update: My account was reinstated yesterday!
      Here's the email that I received:
      Greetings from Amazon Mechanical Turk,

      Thank you for your patience while we reviewed your account. After review, we have determined that your account was suspended in error.

      As such, we have reinstated your account effective immediately. We apologize for the inconvenience that this account suspension may have caused. As a goodwill gesture, we have applied a $10 concession to your Worker earnings balance.
